Proton VPN Review for Venezuela (2026)

Proton VPN gives its anti-censorship protocol, Stealth, to free users with no data cap. For a reader in Caracas or a visitor flying in, that makes it the first VPN to install. Paid plans start at $3.49 a month on a two-year term.

Company: Proton AG, Geneva, Switzerland
Founded: 2014
Anti-censorship protocol: Stealth (free and paid)
Free plan: Yes, no data cap, 1 device
Paid from: $3.49/mo (2-year VPN Plus)
No-logs audits: Securitum, 2022 to 2026

Does Proton VPN work in Venezuela?

Yes, as long as you switch the app to the Stealth protocol. Stealth wraps a WireGuard connection inside an obfuscated TLS tunnel over TCP. Proton built it to look like ordinary HTTPS traffic to an internet filter. That is the kind of filtering CANTV and the other Venezuelan ISPs apply.

Stealth is included on every Proton VPN plan, the free one too. Proton states this in its October 2022 launch post for the protocol. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Mullvad have no free plan at all, so a Venezuelan reader with no foreign card can still get a stealth-capable VPN from Proton.

The weak point is getting the app in the first place. On January 9, 2025, the digital-rights group Ve Sin Filtro reported that more than 20 VPN websites had been blocked in Venezuela, with Proton VPN on the list. It also reported that Digitel and Inter blocked Proton's API address (vpn-api.proton.me), which the app uses to sign in. Install Proton VPN and sign in before you arrive, or download it while connected to another working VPN.

Quick answer: Proton VPN works in Venezuela with Stealth turned on. The free plan is enough for messaging, news sites and banking apps on one device. Pay for VPN Plus if you need more than one device, streaming, or your own choice of server.

Who Proton VPN is for

Proton VPN suits three kinds of reader on this site. The first is a Venezuelan resident who needs a VPN every day and cannot pay for one, or does not want a card charge on record. The free plan covers that case.

The second is an investor, consultant or journalist travelling to Caracas who wants a provider with a public audit record and a privacy-focused jurisdiction. Proton AG is a Swiss company whose primary shareholder is the non-profit Proton Foundation in Geneva. Proton says Swiss law places no logging requirement on its VPN service.

The third is a team that already uses Proton Mail or Proton Drive. The Proton Unlimited plan bundles the VPN with those products under one bill.

What Proton VPN does well

A stealth protocol on the free plan

Most free VPNs run plain WireGuard or OpenVPN, which deep-packet inspection can spot and throttle. Proton's free plan carries the same Stealth protocol as its paid plans. Proton's free-plan page also says the plan has no data limit and shows no ads. Windscribe, the other free option in our VPN roundup, caps free users at 10 GB a month.

Five years of independent no-logs audits

Proton has published a no-logs audit by Securitum, a European security firm, for each year from 2022 to 2026. A clean audit matters more in Venezuela than in most markets. Users there route banking, messaging and news reading through the VPN, and some of that traffic is politically sensitive.

A large network

As of October 2026, Proton's server page lists 20,799 servers in 149 countries. Paid users can pick a server near Venezuela, such as Colombia or Brazil, to keep latency down. The paid Secure Core feature sends traffic through a server in a privacy-friendly country before it reaches the exit server. That costs some speed but adds a second hop.

One company for VPN, mail and storage

Proton Unlimited combines Proton VPN with Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive and Pass. A traveller who wants encrypted email and file storage for a Venezuela trip can buy both from one provider instead of two.

Proton VPN vs NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad and Windscribe

All five providers below appear in our ranking of the best VPNs for Venezuela. Each one has a way around VPN blocking. The differences are price, free access, and how much setup the obfuscation needs.

Provider Anti-blocking option Free plan Entry price (as of Oct 2026) Best for
Proton VPN Stealth (WireGuard over TLS) Yes, no data cap, 1 device $3.49/mo on 2 years ($83.76 upfront) Free use and audited privacy
NordVPN Obfuscated (XOR) servers, NordWhisper No See NordVPN's site Paid all-rounder with many Latin American servers
ExpressVPN Automatic obfuscation on every connection No Highest in our roundup Travellers who want zero setup
Mullvad Shadowsocks obfuscation, DAITA No €5/mo flat, any term Anonymous sign-up, cash or crypto payment
Windscribe WStunnel and stealth modes Yes, 10 GB/mo with email (2 GB without) $9/mo or $69/yr Light free use in 10 countries

Proton VPN vs NordVPN

NordVPN offers two layers of obfuscation: selectable XOR servers and its NordWhisper protocol. It has more physical servers in Latin America, including Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina and Chile. NordVPN has no free plan. Pick NordVPN if you will pay anyway and want the widest choice of nearby exits. Pick Proton if you want a free plan or a Swiss-based provider.

Proton VPN vs ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN applies obfuscation on every connection without any setting to change. That makes it the easiest option for a short business trip. It is also the most expensive service in our roundup and has no free plan. Proton needs one setting change (Stealth) and has a free plan to try first.

Proton VPN vs Mullvad

Mullvad charges a flat €5 a month on every term and covers up to 5 devices. It accepts cash and cryptocurrency and gives a 10% discount for crypto payment. That suits a reader who does not want a card charge at all. Mullvad has no free plan. Proton's two-year plan is cheaper per month and covers 10 devices.

Proton VPN vs Windscribe

Windscribe's free plan gives 10 GB a month after you confirm an email address, or 2 GB without one, on servers in 10 countries. Both free plans include an obfuscation mode. Proton's free plan has no data cap, so it suits daily use from Venezuela. Windscribe Free fits a short trip with light browsing.

Proton VPN pricing

Prices below are from Proton's pricing page in US dollars, as of October 2026. Every paid plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Plan 1 month 1 year 2 years Devices
Proton Free $0 $0 $0 1
VPN Plus $9.99 $4.49/mo ($53.88 first year) $3.49/mo ($83.76 upfront) 10
Proton Unlimited $12.99 $9.99/mo ($119.88) $7.99/mo ($191.76 upfront) VPN plus Mail, Drive, Pass, Calendar

Watch the renewal price. Proton's pricing page says the two-year VPN Plus plan renews at $83.88 every 12 months, which is about double the per-month cost of the first term. Proton Unlimited renews at $119.88 a year.

Proton lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Proton credits as payment methods. Readers paying from Venezuela should confirm their card accepts foreign US-dollar charges before they choose a plan.

Drawbacks

  • The free plan is limited. It allows one device, runs at what Proton calls "medium speed", and does not include streaming, P2P, Secure Core or the NetShield ad blocker.
  • Stealth costs speed. It runs over TCP, which is slower than WireGuard over UDP. Use Stealth on Venezuelan networks and switch back to WireGuard abroad.
  • Stealth is not on every device. Proton lists it for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and iPadOS. The Linux app supports it only with the Proton Protocols option enabled, and Proton lists only WireGuard over UDP for the Linux CLI and Apple TV.
  • Proton's own servers are a blocking target. The January 2025 blocks hit Proton's website and its API address. An installed, signed-in app is far easier to keep running than a fresh install inside Venezuela.
  • Renewal pricing is higher. The introductory two-year price does not carry into the next term.

Setting it up for Venezuela

  • Install Proton VPN on each device and sign in before you leave for Venezuela.
  • In the app's protocol setting, select Stealth.
  • On a paid plan, pick a server in Colombia or Brazil for lower latency.
  • Connect once on a home network to confirm the app works, then again on arrival.

Verdict

Proton VPN is the best starting point for anyone who needs a VPN in Venezuela. The free plan gives the same Stealth protocol as the paid plans, with no data cap, from a Swiss company with five consecutive years of no-logs audits. Paid VPN Plus at $3.49 a month on two years adds 10 devices, streaming and server choice.

Choose NordVPN instead if you want more Latin American exits and will pay from day one. Choose ExpressVPN if you want obfuscation with no settings at all. Choose Mullvad if you want to pay in cash or crypto with no account details.
